Potty training my 2 1/2 year old boy?

My son is 2 1/2 and he has showed interest in going on the potty. For the last couple of weeks I have been trying to take steps in the potty training. It's very frustrating bec. he likes to talk about it but not actually sit on it. I have a separate little potty and the one that sits on the toilet. I have tried the candy method, the reward method with a big toy, made a potty chart with stickers. I get criticism from my mother n law and I feel like people judge me when they see that he isn't potty trained. Is it possible that he isn't ready or should I just keep at it and force him to try to sit on the potty at least once a day??
