Using Continental Onep Award, can stopover be in a different direction than would normally occur?

In most cases you can book an "open jaw" flight -- where your outgoing flight might be from NY to London, but your return flight from Paris back to NY, and you make your own arrangements between the cities in Europe. It happens all the time, especially for vacation flights.
