Is this awkward? Homecoming question?

So i was wondering, is it awkward to ask a guy to homecoming if you are a girl? I'm a sopre, and I want to ask a senior who used to be my neighbor (I moved.) to homecoming with me. But I'm going to write him a note. Is this odd that I'm aksing him? Considering it's now like sadie hawkins or anything? I don't know. I mean, I'm really comfortable around him, but I haven't talked to him in a while. :/ Advice, please?
